Congratulations to the New Alstonville Preschool! An amazing achievement by our small community!
Rous Unplugged has dedicated its existence to supporting the local community through providing a platform for local artists to develop their performance skills, by offering the community a low-cost, high-quality monthly entertainment experience, by bringing energetic community life back to our beautiful Rous Mill Hall and be donating all profits from Rous Unplugged back into the community.
We do this by donating profits to the New Alstonville Preschool. A New preschool was required because the preschool was no longer able to continue in its original form - as the Alstonville Baptist Community Preschool - at the Baptist Church, Wardell Road, Alstonville.

For further information about the New Alstonville Preschool, please read on:

The only dedicated preschool service in Alstonville, Alstonville Baptist Community Preschool, closed at the end of 2013. Supporting more than 75 local families a year, this Preschool has underpinned educational excellence in this community for almost 40 years. The Alstonville Baptist Community Preschool was fully enrolled for 2013, with a long waiting list. Other Community Preschools in the area were also full. If the preschool were to close without replacement this would leave many families without access to a local preschool provision.

Alstonville Primary Schools and High Schools have received outstanding results in previous years and have also been involved in Government pilot plans such as the Empowering Local Schools Initiative and the NSW Ethics Course Trial. The schools regularly complete and place well in university and state debating competitions. These results come from a community committed to seeking and providing quality educational outcomes for their children. This passion and commitment begins at preschool.

Alstonville Community Preschool Inc (ACP) is a not-for-profit, community based organisation established in 2010. Comprised of preschool parents and Alstonville community members, ACP has been actively lobbying Local, State and Federal governments to obtain their support in securing land and building funds for a new preschool. Local, State and Federal Members of Parliament Don Page and Janelle Saffin have offered their support and they continue to work with them to explore funding options.
A full fundraising schedule has been drawn up and public meetings of support have been well attended. Since it’s inception on 2010 ACP has:
- · Formed a management committee
- · Become an incorporated body
- · Prepared and submitted an application for capital funding to the Preschool Growth Program
- · Achieved Deductible Gift Recipient Status (DGR) status for capital works
- · Established a Friends of Alstonville Preschool directory
- · Held community meetings, organised deputations to local Council meetings
- · Met with local Councillors, State and Federal members of Parliament
- · Lobbied the State Minister for Education
- · Lobbied Ballina Council for land
- · Spent over 2,000 volunteer hours on ACP activities
- · Identified potential temporary venue’s to accommodate a for seen gap in service
- · Acquired ACECQA Provider Approval
In December, 2012, we received a majority vote "that Council adopt Draft Amendment No. 7 to the Ballina Shire Principal Generic Plan of Management for Community Land to recategorise approximately 4000m² of land on the northern edge of Crawford Park from “park” and “sportsground” to “general community use” and the insertion of special provisions to enable the establishment of the proposed Alstonville Community Preschool. This allows the project to to progress to the next stage which is preparation and lodgement of of a development application and assessment of that application by council planning staff. While there is still a long way to go this stage has been the biggest hurdle to date and to make it this far is a huge achievement.
ACP is currently in the process of compiling a development application for Crawford Park, we continue to lobby with State government for funding and are applying for community grants to fund the development of a purpose built preschool on the site. In the meantime, we are actively pursuing temporary accommodation for the preschool in the anticipation that there maybe a gap in service.
Together with the Alstonville community ACP are working hard to raise funds to build a new community preschool at Crawford Park and to identify a temporary venue to ensure the continuation of quality service provision during its construction.
